STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS – SPOILER REVIEW

Image

Let’s remember there was a time before sonic showers…

Hi ya’ll,

SO I know I promised a blow by blow review of each scene, how i felt, how it compared to the series bla blah blah. But after an hour of writing I was still only about twenty minutes into the film and i’m sorry, but I can’t do it!

So instead I’ve picked my favorite, note worthy scenes.

1. Kirk gets demoted. Chris pine actually looks as if he is about to faint, and it’s that kind of subtle acting that I rave about in my spoiler free review-https://pursuitofnerdiness.wordpress.com/2013/05/10/star-trek-into-darkness-spoiler-free-review/ .

Ggreenwood as pike is also fantastic, I really like the father-son relationship between him and kirk which made pikes death all the more sad later in the film (another splendid display by greenwood) HOWEVER spock suddenly mind melds with pike, without ASKING? It’s an incredibly private and intimate process as far as vulcan lore goes and the fact that Spock did is so out of character but then I thought (ok, so he’s going to give kirk pikes memories so he can see how proud he was of him…maybe) but no, that didn’t happen, it was so random I think JJ just wanted to sneak a meld in. bah.

2. Noel clark exploded london. – you heard me. I totally got it, it made sense, it surprised me just enough, very good scene. very good man tears. Cumberbatch you devil, you.

3. Scotty quitting. Made sense. actually did, kind of plot pointish but it’s true, admitting weapons of mass destruction and not checking them first? kirk was obvs crazy with grief and full of vengence. made sense for Scotty to quick ( a genuine reaction to what is happening added to realism) love Simon Pegg. well done – subsequent return even more awesome as result. CON- Chekov is suddenly head engineer? he’s like eighteen at this point and obviously has NO idea what he is doing, and the crew would already have another guy ready to step up if Scotty died in service anyway! It made no sense logically but i get that they needed to do something with him as there was no part of the overall plot he really had a place.

Are you sure about this JJ – uh I mean – captain?

4. Spock does not like Carol Marcus! this scene made me laugh. just as kirk and Spock are about to depart via shuttle to the enterprise Carol Marcus comes aboard claiming to be an extra science officer (Spock’s position) and he is all “Da faq are you here for bitch?” but more stoically. he feels like his toes have been stepped on and she takes a seat directly between him and kirk. Kirk is of course all for more hot blondes. A lol scene.

5. Sulu – Do.not. fuck. with. ME. essentially, was about two minutes of dialogue but totally redeemed the fact that we don’t see much else of him through out the film.

6. KLINGONS! saw them for all of five minutes, it was alright but I miss worf 😦 the fact that they were more established in this film leads me to believe that in the next film it’s about the war with the klingons. hopefully Jennifer Garner will be in it as she has expressed an interest in becoming a bumpy forehead angry troll herself.

THE FEELS…

7. BTW my name is Khan. GASP. that is all.

8. Benedict Cumberbatch kicking ass and taking names was —- Wow, just wow. very well done sir, equal parts scary and sexy. Bravo. He’s subsequent taking over of the USS vengence (best ship ever!) was actually “OMG!” he exploded the admirals head. HE EXPLODED HIS FREAKING HEAD!

Image

9. Kirk realizing he fucked up BIG. he apologies to his crew when it looks like he’s screwed them all and you just feel so much for him and them it’s redonk. Then boom! Scotty saves the day running around vengence pulling out plugs and flipping switches. Scotty running is one of the best lol scenes in the movie. Best return ever. talk about the right place at the right time huh?

Image

For the love of God, get me out of here!

10.Spock contacting Spock prime. Un-needed. Completely. glad to see Nimoy, love that man, but all he said was “i have made a sacred promise not he mess up the timeline by warning you about anything – But you can’t trust that bitch, Khan -total douche” Spock would NEVER mess up the timeline. FALSE!

11. Kirk dies – CALLED IT! – https://pursuitofnerdiness.wordpress.com/2013/05/08/star-trek-into-darkness-predictions/

But I wasn’t happy about it (sad not bad). Kirk was brave, punched Scotty (out of love) and took his death like a man. The goodbye scene between him and Spock was amazing as Spock realizes that kirk always considered him a friend despite their differences which made the next biit all the more amazing.

“KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spock on a rampage – best thing in star trek ever!  game over Benedict, walk away now!

It was amazing.

12. Kirks back. MUTANT TRIBBLE DNA TO THE RESCUE!

13. To Boldly go….great ending, they get the five year mission, stick Cumberbatch in a tub so he’s the future generations problem, Marcus is still on board I think. and all is well in the universe. TO BE CONTINUED!

minor points of interest:

1. Christine chapel mentioned as a crush of Kirks – uhura probably had her transferd

2. Spock and uhura sweet moment on tip toe, ya’ll know the one. would prefer a hint of pon farr next film (you know what I mean?!)

3. Carol Marcus was annoying, i’m not going to go into it because according to lore she sticks around a while and there’s naught I can do about it…

4. “I want to rip…his bangs off!”

5. LOVE THIS FILM! Seeing it again soon on the 25th. I suggest ya’ll do the same. Cannot wait for the next and possible final installment.

Overall rating: 5/5

Star Trek: Into Darkness – Spoiler free review

For those who have not yet seen it’s greatness.

 Image

The first thing I want to tip my hat at is the amazing writing and subsequent acting. Even in the first twenty minutes it’s evident that the studio was happy for their male actors to actually show emotion. Que bromances, and manly tears. This was not over done, but rather quite subtle which made it all the more natural and relatable to me as an audience member. Particular shout outs to Pine, Quinto and Greenwood. But I can’t go into which bits here, I’ll cover it in my blow by blow spoiler filled review later. But you know what you guys did 🙂

Image

The feels….I cannot control them.

The acting from other casts members was also wonderful in fact I cannot think of anyone to fault with shoddy acting even the extras were engaging so well done there, good work from the casting team. Especially the genius that decided to cast Benedict Cumberbatch as the dastardly john Harris, I’ve not seen him play the villain before and he was spectacular and surprisingly good at his action scenes so, well done sir. (again more in-depth details to follow)

Hello Clarice…

For those that tuned into my blog the day before yesterday you would know I am very interested in the outcome of the plot, without spoilering it. The plot was fast paced, engaging, interesting and kept me guessing all the way through (no easy feet believe me).

What I liked most was the character development throughout, in particular Kirk and Spock (duh) Spock who goes through a journey with his emotions and learning how to control them or even explode at one (amazing) scene and Kirk who learns to take responsibility for his actions and finally realizes that he has to do a lot better for his crew, he can’t just skirt by with witty one liners and great hair (as scotty puts it). It was all very good, and very believable.

Sulu’s fifth PUI (Piloting under the influence)

Speaking of believable, we saw a lot more futuristic earth then we did in the last film, future London was not so futuristic that it was unrecognizable, in fact aside from the flying ships in the air it could easily have been our capitol in a few years time, which as a londener I thought was pretty cool. The fashions as well were underplayed, more grey tone and stylish then the vulgar LSD color things in the original and early deep space nine series. Bravo wardrobe, however I felt that the starfleet dress uniforms were a wee bit drab.

That guy’s not getting paid……………………….these ladies DEFINITELY are….

ImageImage

monotone and serious…………..PRETTY COLORS AND SPARKLES!

There were also a number of subtle nods to the series for instance at one point McCoy is examining a tribble (which was adorbs), star fleet has a meeting at the daytrom institute and I was all like “science, androids, data!” but this daystrom had not yet been utilized for science as far as I could tell. There were a few more but the biggest nod to the series came from the newly envisioned klingons who now pierce their head ridges now apparently. They looked pretty good, I even saw a batleth or too which made me miss worf quite a bit 😦

ImageImage

                                         Klingons…….awesome.

Although some pleb spelt the klingon homeworld’s name wrong: It’s Qo’nos not KRONOS, you p’tak!

So plot: Good. Design: good, loyalty to series: Good, Acting: incredible.

Banter and humor was also rife, with all of the crew having ‘a moment’ which made me chuckle to myself more then a few times. As a fan of the franchise I was very pleased with this latest development, so much so that I couldn’t write this review yesterday as I immediately came home and watched the first film and youtube the interviews still heavily in trekkie mode.

 FINAL THOUGHTS:

I cannot stress this enough – even if you don’t like sci-fi, this film is amazing.

DO IT.

Star trek: into darkness – predictions

Image

Something you should know about me – I’m a massive trekkie.

Like most star trek series  fans, after seeing 2009 star trek film, I felt a little cheated.

Sure it was fun, and I actually liked spock and uhura getting together, then of course JJ Abrahms was amazing.

However, with the movies ‘alternate timeline’ plot, what that essentially did to all us long term fans was say:

Hey, remember the years you spent watching the original series, next generation, deep space nine and voyager?  NEVER HAPPENED HA HA!”

But if I can somehow push this to the back of my brain I could still manage to enjoy the film, like so many others did (even non sci-fi fans). Which is why I can’t understand how it has taken sooooooo long to bring out a sequel?

P.S. Thank you for casting my favourite actor Mr. Benedict Cumberbatch as a bad-ass, sexy-as-all-get-up, villain extrordinare.

So my predictions; now, these are based solely on the trailers and clips we have been allowed to see by the studio. No leaks, No spoilers, just good old hunches.

So It’s mostly this:

Kirk Dies.

“Why? the main charcter can’t die! “I hear you say. Well remember this is JJ we’re dealing with. But allow me to go through my evidence, step by step.

1. THIS ->

This is the trailer with the voice over of  Pike chastising kirk ‘”You think you can’t make mistakes yada yada yada” these and similar audio snippets build a theme of kirk is over confident, cocky and one day going to get his crew killed  the one thing that kirk fears the most. Remember our boy doesn’t believe in no-win scenarios. But and others go on you realise this trailer and others essentially confirm that kirk f**ks up somewhere. In one bit he even says “I’m sorry” to the entire bridge. So what do we learn from this?

Kirk loves his crew, they are his family.

He has put them in danger

He cannot stand the thought of loosing them and would do anything to protect them.

2. THIS ->

Image

for you non-trekkies out there, this is the iconic seen from the ORIGINAL star trek movie sequel wrath of khan. In which spock dies sacrificing himself for the good of the  crew. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” The same sentiment is expressed by 2009 spock in the opening first nine minutes of into darkness. (obvious red herring) but look ->

Image

the exact same hand gesture in the new film (via trailer) JJ knew exactly what he was doing including this snippet in, he wanted the trekkies to bite, thinking that history was going to repeat itself. But –  AND BIG SPOILERS HERE (DONT LOOK!!!!!!!)

Spocks hand -blue arm- is reaching down ,from standing or crouching, but the black arm -presumably kirks is reaching up – from the floor? in agony? like spock was?!?!?!?!?!

What a twist?

The icing on the cake?

3. THIS ->

Image

Spock staring into a containment pod? AUTHORIZED PERSONAL ONLY is spelt backwards on the glass, just like in wrath of khan, and hes looking down at something (SOMEONE) and screaming. The hand was white so it’s definitely not Uhura.

So ask yourselves, whose death would cause such a reaction from the emotionally stoic half vulcan?

I rest my case.
